Virgil van Dijk could leave Southampton this transfer window despite the club’s insistence that he isn’t going anywhere – but any buyer will have to break the world record for a centre-back.
According to Yahoo! Sport, a source close to Southampton has said that any offer in excess of £70million could tempt the club into selling their star centre-back, with Chelsea very keen on acquiring him.
Despite being the bookmakers’ favourite, Southampton do not want to sell the 26-year-old to Liverpool, who were caught in a tapping up row earlier this summer and had to publicly apologise to Southampton or risk serious action from the Premier League.
It is claimed by Yahoo! that Van Dijk is more likely to be sold to Chelsea or Manchester City if he goes anywhere, but the Saints are still hopeful of holding on to the Dutchman for one more year, despite his transfer request last week.
City are very unlikely to spend anything close to £70million on a defender unless they reallocate the funds from their striker chase, with deals for Kylian Mbappé and Alexis Sanchez looking less likely by the day. Mbappé appears to be PSG-bound, while Arsenal remain steadfast in their refusal to sell Alexis to a domestic rival.
But even if they change their priorities, it remains to be seen if they would be willing to pay an eye-watering £70million for Virgil van Dijk this summer.
