Manchester City remain interested in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, despite balking at Southampton’s £50million-plus asking price earlier in the transfer window.
According to Mirror, City have asked to be kept up to date about developments surrounding the best available Premier League centre-back. Pep Guardiola has been searching for a new player in that position, but recent reports have speculated that they want a cheaper one to replace Aleksandar Kolarov, rather than an expensive big name.
It is thought that most of City’s remaining budget is committed to the acquisition of another attacker, but with deals for either Kylian Mbappé or Alexis Sanchez looking less likely than ever, could Guardiola instead invest in an elite central defender?
If the Blues do fully reignite their interest in 26-year-old Van Dijk, who was strongly tipped to join City in January, then they will have to act fast. The Mirror reports that a frustrated Antonio Conte is preparing a £50million bid to take the Dutchman to Chelsea, which could now be accelerated following Gary Cahill’s red card against Burnley.
Unlike City, the Premier League champions have not enjoyed their most productive transfer window and are looking to do some big business in the last fortnight. Liverpool also remain keen on Van Dijk after spectacularly cocking up what had seemed like a done deal to sign him earlier this summer.
