Manchester City will turn their attention back to Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappé should they fail to sign primary target Alexis Sanchez, Sam Lee of Goal reports.
City are becoming worried that PSG will, for the second time this summer after Dani Alves, gazump them in the race for Sanchez following reports of meetings involving the Arsenal star and his agent with representatives of the Parisien club.
Pep Guardiola is targeting one elite attacking option this summer with Alexis at the top of his list, but Sam Lee reports that some at City believe PSG’s Qatari owners are going after City targets as an act of retaliation due to City’s backing from Abu Dhabi.
The United Arab Emirates is one of the nations that cut off diplomatic relations with Qatar in June, accusing them of supporting terrorism, and it seems that these politics may have crept into the world of football.
City have long admired Mbappé and had a £34.5million bid rejected for him a year ago when he was barely known. Goal reports that City would have liked to have sign both Mbappé and Alexis, but having already spent £200million this summer, that is highly unlikely.
It was recently claimed that Monaco were threatening to report both City and PSG to UEFA for approaching Mbappé without permission. City were never named as one of the clubs Monaco made reference to in their public statement, but Sky Sports reported City were one of the offenders.
Despite that, it is clear that relations between Manchester City and Monaco are at least cordial, with the clubs currently concluding negotiations on their second deal of the summer, for Benjamin Mendy, who is currently flying to Los Angeles to complete his protracted move to City. Mendy will join former Monaco teammate Bernardo Silva at the Etihad… but could his close friend Kylian Mbappé also end up in Manchester? As the shirt says…
