Former Manchester City academy player Kasper Schmeichel could be on his way back to the Etihad Stadium this summer, if reports from The Sunday Times and Mail on Sunday are to be believed.
The 30-year-old Leicester goalkeeper is subject to interest from his former club according to both newspapers, with the Times claiming that unwanted England goalkeeper Joe Hart could be offered in exchange as part of a swap deal.
Guardiola wants a new goalkeeper who can retain possession and build play from the back, and apparently sees Schmeichel as someone who ticks the right boxes. Everton are also credited with an interest in the Leicester shot-stopper, who Pep praised for his performance last week at the Etihad.
Schmeichel made ten first-team appearances for Manchester City early in his career before moving on and would be considered a ‘club-trained’ player if he was to return.
He is one of several goalkeepers being linked with the club, after Claudio Bravo failed to impress this season. Reports continue to appear in Portugal that suggest Ederson Moraes is on his way from Benfica.
Meanwhile, Willy Caballero is hoping to extend his stay in Manchester after becoming first-choice goalkeeper for much of the season.
“I’m really happy here and I would love to speak with the club when the last game finishes,” the 35-year-old said.
“For me it has been my best season. My family enjoyed it as I was playing more games so we are happy to continue. This is the season that I played the most so I’m really happy.
“Do I want to be here next season? Yes, of course. Of course I want to be because this is the most important time of my career.
“It’s a big, big club for me so I want to stay. But it’s not just my decision. It’s the decision of the club and what they are looking for.
“So for now I just want to enjoy the next game and try to achieve our last target.
“Probably they will meet with my agent but for my side I have to concentrate on my next game because we need the three points.”
