Former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis announces his retirement

Former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.

Capped 51 times by Argentina, the centre-back joined Manchester City after the briefest stint at Atletico Madrid in 2013, and went on to make 104 appearances in total for the Blues.

Often criticised early on, he soon adapted to English football and played a big role in the double-winning season of 2013-14 under Manuel Pellegrini.

Though it soon became clear age was catching up with him and his performances declined, Demichelis enjoyed a productive stay at the Etihad, winning the Premier League and two League Cups.

On 10 June 2016, Demichelis was released by Manchester City and had spells at Espanyol and, for a second time, Málaga.

At his farewell press conference today, Demichelis said, “I want to be honest, I lost the strength in my legs and my concentration. But I want to give thanks to football.”

He was also responsible for one of the coolest videos ever…

Happy retirement Martin Demichelis!
