Unless of a major surprise, Manchester City fans will soon bid an emotional farewell to one of the most loved players in club history, Pablo Zabaleta. The signs are there and City’s interest in Tottenham’s Kyle Walker and Benfica’s Nélson Semedo means at least one right-back is on the way.
And despite a decline as age has caught up to him, Zabaleta is still a player in demand – so much so that he has been offered a bumper deal to join West Ham, as reported by reliable City journalist Martin Blackburn of The Sun.
Zaba to West Ham was also reported in April by well-connected Italian news portal TMW and now comes news from closer to home that the Hammers are all-in for the iconic Argentine.
West Ham boss Slaven Bilic initially made an enquiry for City’s other right-back Bacary Sagna – another veteran out of contract in June – but has now decided to offer Zabaleta a two-year deal worth £100,000-a-week. Quite a proposition for a 32-year-old, enabling him to remain in the Premier League.
Recent comments by Zabaleta have hinted strongly that he knows his time at the Etihad is up after nine glorious years, and it will be a truly emotional day if it is confirmed in the near future. But it may not be a complete farewell if he lines up against City in the claret-and-blue of West Ham next season.
