Manchester City had seemed poised to sign a 17-year-old defender named Dan-Axel Zagadou, described as one of the best teenage defenders in world football.
Zagadou, who is refusing to sign a deal at Paris Saint-Germain, had been given a tour of the City Football Academy in the winter and it is even claimed that he met Pep Guardiola who no doubt worked his charms.
And with PSG all but giving hope of retaining the French youth international, City appeared to have him in the bag, despite rival interest from German sides Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig.
And then came another Bundesliga outfit, Borussia Dortmund. According to France Football, Dortmund have swooped in out of nowhere and are suddenly in advanced talks to sign the young talent.
The reason City may miss out is the same one that could cost PSG the centre-back: the recurring problem of not being able to guarantee youngsters a clear pathway to the first team. Borussia Dortmund are famed for doing this and that appears to have been decisive, with Zagadou now closer to the German side than City.
