Manchester City are looking to make major changes to the defence this summer and that will include at least one centre-back – possibly more. But could one candidate to shore up the backline be a former youngster, one once heralded as a future City captain?
According to German newspaper BILD, 24-year-old defender Matija Nastasić, who joined City from Fiorentina in 2012 before leaving for Schalke in 2015, has a release clause of just €15 million (£12.8 million) and could be on the move soon.
Nastasić was hit by injury problems at City and has suffered similar issues at Schalke, but has managed 33 appearances this season. And BILD claims that there is serious interest from ‘top English clubs’ without specifically naming any.
Would it be beyond reason that City might consider bringing back the former Roberto Mancini favourite at such a low price? Would he suit Pep Guardiola’s style? He certain has the technical ability, with a pass success rate of 85.6% this season, but whether he could adapt to Pep’s demanding high-line system is another question.
If Nastasić is of no interest to City, he could line up against them next season if Premier League sides follow through on their interest in the Serbian international. A player once considered one of the “next big things” in football, a return to the English league would surely help him fulfill his great potential.
