Yaya Touré has made a bold claim about yesterday’s refereeing performance by Craig Pawson against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final yesterday. Manchester City clearly felt cheated when a goal was disallowed after the linesman incorrectly ruled the ball out of play, one on a long list of wrong decisions for both sides.
The performance of Craig Pawson has been questioned before and it is a mystery why he was handed the whistle on the biggest stage in English football, and his showing against Arsenal yesterday will surely bring more questions to his ability.
Of course it’s not the only reason Manchester City were knocked out by Arsenal, however it was a contributing factor.
Speaking after a frustrating game, Yaya Touré said:
“I think the referees have to stop this. I am very disappointed. It is not the first time, there have been a couple of times.
“If we have to talk about referees, people are going to say ‘we complain’ but when we see the highlights, for me it is very disappointing.
“Maybe on Thursday we are going to have a better referee or maybe play without a referee – I’d prefer that.”
Yaya Touré was then asked his opinion on Pawson’s decision to rule out a Manchester City goal and if the ball stayed in play, the midfielder said: “Definitely, and it was a penalty and something more.
“But what can we do? If (we) talk about the referee the FA is going to come in for the punishment if we think like that, but I think I need to sleep and rest and forget this game.”
