Manchester City are reportedly closing in on the signing of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez has been heavily linked with a whole host of clubs in recent months including Chelsea, Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich, but reports from Chile suggest that Manchester could be his next destination.
According to Maks Cárdenas, a correspondent of Chilean radio station Cooperativa, City are the club that are leading the way for the 28-year-old’s signature and would be willing to pay up to £50 million.
Sanchez has been the shining light of a struggling Arsenal side this season, and the Gunners seem like they will be unable to keep hold of their most prized asset. The Chilean’s contract expires in 2018 and it is unlikely that Arsenal will be able to match both Sanchez’s wage demands and level of ambition.
Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Sanchez and managed him for two years during his time at Barcelona. The two have maintained a good relationship despite their time apart, as can be seen by their embrace after City played against Arsenal.
With Sergio Aguero’s future in Manchester hanging in the balance, the Blues are likely to be in the market for a new striker during the summer transfer window. While moves for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Kylian Mbappé have been mooted, it appears that Alexis Sanchez is now the Blues’ top target.
City first tried to sign Sánchez when he played for Udinese, but he opted instead for a move to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona. When Barça put him up for sale, Manuel Pellegrini told ADN that City again wanted him, but limits on spending and squad size back then meant it couldn’t be achieved.
Could it finally happen this summer?
