Manchester City and Isco: a better love story than Twilight. But will it end with the 24-year-old Real Madrid playmaker joining Pep Guardiola’s side this summer?
The Spain international is out of contract in 2018 and Madridistas worldwide have been horrified by reports in recent days that Barcelona are planning to make an approach for him.
According to Spanish journalist, Diego Torres Romano, Madrid are so concerned at the prospect of Isco joining Barça, they are willing to give a foreign club a huge discount if Isco refuses to renew his contract.
Romano initially tweeted that Isco will be available to foreign clubs for €12 million (£10.3 million) before revising his tweet to say €15 million (£12.9 million). €12 million, €15 million… even €20 million would be a bargain for the gifted midfielder, who almost joined City in 2013 before a call from Zinedine Zidane led him to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Romano says that unless Isco renews his Real Madrid contract, he will be sold abroad before September 1. Madrid’s priority is to stop him from joining Barcelona, no matter what the financial sacrifice.
Isco’s market value is €40 million (£34.5 million) so if the figures mentioned are true, someone, quite possibly Manchester City, could be in for one of the biggest bargains in years.
The player himself is yet to decide anything and although he enjoys life in Madrid, he has grown frustrated at never quite becoming a focal point of the team, despite playing under three separate coaches (Ancelotti, Benitez, Zidane) there.
Until the end of March, the City Store is marking down some iconic Retro Shirts to £20 (£18 for Cityzens).
