Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan is hoping to return to action in time to participate in City’s pre-season campaign in America.
Gündogan has been sidelined since December after he damaged his cruciate knee ligaments and was expected to remain out until September, but his recent Instagram post appears to suggest that he is progressing well and could return in July, two months earlier than expected.
“Unfortunately, my injury is a long-term injury, it takes quite a few months to recover, but I am okay with that. That is fine for me, I work hard” said Gündogan. “I just try to do the best every day and try to come back as soon as possible on the field. Hopefully, I can start pre-season.”
The German is now in line for a comeback on July 20, when City face Manchester United in the International Champions Cup in the United States, and is expected to be back to full fitness in time for the start of the 2017/18 Premier League season, regardless of his participation in the pre-season schedule.
Prior to his injury, the 26-year-old had impressed in his first season the club after joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer – with a Man of the Match display against Barcelona helping City into the knockout stages of the Champions League.
