From zero to hero (again), Yaya Touré has completed a remarkable comeback this season at Manchester City. Exiled from the matchday squad because of outrageous comments made by his agent, Dimitri Seluk, Yaya seemed to be heading for the exit door.
Then the Ivorian took the bold step of publicly apologising to Pep Guardiola and the club, leading to his reinstatement. Since that time, his agent has been quiet and Touré has done his talking on the pitch with a string of high-quality performances. Despite approaching 34 years of age, Yaya looks in great shape and said that even his wife thinks he looks younger!
The dilemma for Guardiola and City has been whether to renew Yaya’s soon-to-expire contract after the fiasco involving his agent. Touré, who has been one of Manchester City’s most important players since joining from Barcelona for £24 million in 2010, is out of contract next summer and is one of the club’s highest paid players.
According to Catalan newspaper SPORT, a contract renewal for the midfield talisman is now a serious possibility. The report claims that with the full endorsement of Pep Guardiola, City bosses have begun to take steps towards renewing Yaya’s contract.
With Guardiola and Yaya now enjoying a fully functioning relationship, Touré would seriously consider signing a new deal, and the signals both publicly and privately have been that this could happen. The serious injury to İlkay Gündoğan has also worked in his favour, showing the need for depth in midfield, with Fernando and Fabian Delph perhaps not quite at the standard Guardiola wants.
Pep is said to be ‘delighted’ with Touré’s performances since returning and the two could find themselves working together next season, something that seemed improbable several months ago.
What do you think? Should City renew Yaya’s contract or look towards the future?
