Manchester City are certain to reinforce the defence this coming summer, with the full-back positions in particular set for an overhaul. But it appears that Pep Guardiola still isn’t content with his options in the middle of defence, with Virgil van Dijk, Aymeric Laporte and Lucas Hernández among the centre-backs being linked.
A less familiar name now being linked is Freiburg defender Çağlar Söyüncü, a 20-year-old who has been capped twice by the Turkish national team. Söyüncü only joined the Bundesliga side from Altınordu last May, but the Turkish edition of FourFourTwo has described him as a natural leader with good tackling, timing, playmaking and dribbling. Combine those qualities together and it does make for an ideal Pep Guardiola style defender.
Söyüncü’s agent, Mustafa Doğru, has been speaking openly to the press and confirmed that Manchester City have an interest in his client.
Doğru said the talented defender had received offers from Zenit, Lille and Roma, but neither of them compelled him to move from the Bundesliga, where he has impressed for 8th placed Freiburg.
The agent seemed more interested in contact made by City, admitting that an agent representing the Premier League club had contacted him to talk about Söyüncü, but that no details have been discussed yet. Doğru told the media, “Manchester City reached us via an agent, but we haven’t talked about the details. Çağlar’s game logically suits Pep Guardiola and his goal is to play in the Premier League.”
Çağlar Söyüncü is likely to be one of several names on a list of potential targets so his agent’s admission does not mean he will be a Manchester City player come next season. But with youth and an impressive skill set on his side, he may come under serious consideration as Pep looks to improve his backline ahead of the 2017-18 season.
