In a surprise transfer late in the day, Manchester City have sold Republic of Ireland under-21 international Jack Byrne to Championship side Wigan Athletic on a permanent deal.

The 20-year-old midfielder signs a three and a half year contract, subject to EFL and FA clearance, and Wigan boss Warren Joyce has described Jack as “one for the long-term”.
Byrne enjoyed a success loan deal at Cambuur in the Netherlands last season, but a temporary switch to Blackburn this season didn’t go well, leading to him being recalled by his parent club this month.
The Irishman will now continue his career at Wigan having joined for an undisclosed fee. He spent five years at City without making a first-team appearance and at the age of 20, will now look to continue his development at the Championship strugglers.
