Pep Guardiola could soon be reunited with one of his old charges from Bayern Munich, with a report in Spain claiming that talks have opened over a deal to bring on of Bayern’s full-backs to the Etihad.
23-year-old Spain international Juan Bernat is undoubtedly a talented player, but the presence of the even better David Alaba at the Allianz Arena has limited his time on the pitch this season. Bernat has started just 4 games at left-back in the Bundesliga, compared to Alaba’s 14 starts there.
And according to AS, Bernat is one of Pep Guardiola’s ‘main goals’ for next season. Having already signed him for Bayern Munich from Valencia, Guardiola now wants to recruit Bernat for Manchester City from Bayern.
If the information from AS is accurate, this has already passed interest stage and negotiations are underway over a deal that would see Bernat join City next summer. However, Bayern do not want to relinquish the player, who they rate highly despite his back up role, and it could take some convincing from Txiki Begiristain to make it happen.
Bernat is a skillful and mobile left-back who is also comfortable with the ball, averaging an impressive 88.1% pass accuracy in all competitions this season. Capped 7 times for Spain since 2014, he has made 86 appearances in three seasons at Bayern, but the chance to work with Pep again and play more regularly may appeal to him.
