After watching veterans Yaya Touré and Pablo Zabaleta struggle in the middle of the park at the weekend, Pep Guardiola may have decided enough is enough, with multiple reports today suggesting a new midfielder could be on the way.
Guardiola is said to have highlighted the centre of the park as a ‘major worry’, with Fernandinho constantly suspended, İlkay Gündoğan out for the season, and even Fernando having injury problems of late. And Carvalho, who has also been looked at by West Brom, is one of the names on his wanted list.
City have already made moves to sign the Euro 2016 winner according to HITC, with talks handled by Pep Guardiola’s brother, Pere Guardiola, but so far the club have yet to meet Sporting’s £30 million valuation of the 24-year-old.
However, with serious problems in midfield, as we saw at Goodison Park on Sunday, City could push ahead with a bigger bid for Carvalho, who has been linked with a host of big clubs in recent years, but remains in Portugal. There is also interest from China, and they would be willing to out bid City, but the player has no interest in going there.
There have been some doubts raised about whether Carvalho would be best suited to the Premier League due to a shortage of pace, but he certainly has the right physical attributes and is an accurate passer, with a pass completion rate of close to 90% this season.
