Manchester City director of football, Txiki Begiristain, has been spotted in the city of Valencia by local newspaper Superdeporte.
The 52-year-old is reported to have met Valencia sporting director, José Ramón Alexanko, at a restauraunt in the region, before the two headed to a nearby hotel for talks.
The obvious talking point would be Eliaquim Mangala, the Manchester City defender currently on loan at Los Che, who they are unlikely to sign permanently because of average form and economic reasons.
However, Mangala wasn’t the main topic of discussion according to Superdeporte. Txiki is said to have been there primarily to talk about some of the better young players in Valencia’s academy, who City have an interest in.
No specific names were mentioned or any further details, but it is an example of how Begiristain’s role goes beyond first-team recruitment down to the youth levels, as he works to snap up even more talent for one of the most stacked academies in world football.
Some City fans will be hoping Txiki continues his jet-setting to acquire some first-team players this month, with Pep Guardiola’s existing squad struggling to perform at the high standards expected. Perhaps he could have a word with Mr. Alexanko about 21-year-old left-back, José Gayá, while in Valencia?
