City youngster Pablo Maffeo has joined Spanish Second Division club Girona on loan until the end of the season.
The news will come as a surprise to most City fans given the club’s obvious weakness in the full-back position.
Maffeo’s departure could indicate that the Blues have a replacement lined-up in January, and Pep Guardiola alluded to a lack of depth at full-back in his pre-match press conference before yesterday’s game at Hull City.
Maffeo has made three starts for the club this season and has impressed on all three occasions, with assured performances against Steaua Bucharest, Manchester United and Celtic.
The 19-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at the same club, but found it hard to break into their first team initially.
Girona have very strong ties to Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s brother, Pere, is a major stakeholder in the Spanish club. These links are strengthened by the fact that Pere is also Maffeo’s agent, and could be the main reason as to why the highly-rated Spanish full-back has decided to join a club that are perhaps below his level.
Hopefully the move will help Pablo to develop his game and he will return to Manchester as a better player. Good luck, Pablo.
