Manchester City have made a ‘strong’ move to sign former Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City midfielder Steven N’Zonzi in recent days, according to reputable Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla.
The 28-year-old has been a hit at Sevilla since his £7 million transfer from Stoke in 2015, not only with his ability to break up play in midfield, but a high pass success rate of around 90%. N’Zonzi has featured alongside Manchester City loanee Samir Nasri in Sevilla’s midfield this season, with the Andalusian club third in La Liga, just a point behind Barcelona.
Italian champions Juventus are moving quickly to sign N’Zonzi though, despite their plans to also bring in Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel. Wary of competition not just from City, but also possibly Chelsea next summer, the Serie A club want to get a deal done quickly, and may pay an instalment of €15 million to secure him for June.
However, with City looking at midfield options after the injury to İlkay Gündoğan, N’Zonzi appears to be a possibility, with Spanish newspaper Marca also linking him with a switch to the Etihad in recent days.
N’Zonzi averages over 20 more passes per game at Sevilla than he did at Stoke, and having proven he can both succeed in a more technical style of play and deal with the physicality of the Premier League, he could a logical buy if Pep Guardiola decides to strengthen the midfield next month.
