Veteran referee Martin Atkinson has been handed the big game between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday.
The 45-year-old hasn’t been in charge of a City game since March, when he oversaw Liverpool’s 3-0 demolition of the Blues at Anfield and handed out just a single yellow card (to Jesús Navas). Prior to that, he was the referee for City’s League Cup semi final second leg win over Everton in January.
Atkinson’s most recent Arsenal game was when they thumped Sunderland 4-1 at the Stadium of Light this season, a match in which he handed out seven yellow cards. His previous Arsenal game before that saw him deliver eight yellow cards in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Leicester, including a double yellow for Leicester full-back Danny Simpson.
The match officials for this Sunday’s game in full are:
Referee: Martin Atkinson
Assistants: G Beswick, A Nunn
Fourth official: Robert Madley
