City’s U19 side succumbed to their second loss against Barcelona U19s in a matter of weeks, as the Catalan side secured a 2-0 win at ‘The Minihad’ thanks to two first-half goals.
Jordi Mboula put the away side ahead with a beautifully controlled finish in the 19th minute, after debutant, Joel Latibeaudiere, was unable to stop a dangerous cross into the box. Left-back, Marc Cucurella, doubled Barca’s lead just a minute before half-time with an excellent strike from outside the area, driving the ball low into the bottom corner.
City were far from at their best in the first-half, but will have been disappointed to be 2-0 down at the break.
Simon Davies brought on Lukas Nmecha for Sadou Diallo at half-time, and the young English striker gave City the presence which they were desperately missing up-front. The Blues improved in the second-half, matching their opponents blow-for-blow, but just missing the necessary clinical edge.
The game was summed up in a four minute spell during the final ten minutes, in which Lukas Nmecha hit the post when it was easier to score, then had a goal ruled out for offside, before missing another one-on-one in the final minute of the ninety.
In truth, City could have played all night and not scored. It really was ‘one of those days’ for the young Blues.
Let’s hope the first team fares better when they face Barcelona at The Etihad tonight.
