Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City (EFL Cup): Player Ratings

Willy Caballero – 7

One of his most confident appearances for the club and seems to have improved significantly with the ball at his feet which bodes well for the visit of Barça. Saved really well from a very good Pogba chance, tipping the ball onto the post. Intercepted a ball into the box in the first half by slapping it out of the area. Interesting.

Pablo Maffeo – 7.5

Marcus Rashford could not get by the young full back for love nor money throughout a very impressive first half in which he looked incredibly composed in possession. Made an outstanding sliding challenge to thwart a counter attack on the halfway line towards the end of the first half. Always looked to get forwards and kept his composure whilst Otamendi’s dripped away.

Nicolas Otamendi – 6

A decent start in the first half, looked composed on the ball but dived in to a couple of challenges unnecessarily. Got worse following half time, wanted too long on the ball and started losing his composure and committing himself too early, a familiar trait.

Vincent Kompany – 6.5

Hopefully the captain was taken off at half time as a precaution/tactical minutes. Looked a little hurried on the ball in the first half with several stray passes all over the pitch but never really put us in any danger and seemed to have a calming influence on Otamendi.

Gael Clichy – 6.5

One of the more difficult players to assess as always. Never struggled at the back, as good support on the flanks defensively from Nolito initially and later on Sané and Navas helped out, also. Looked to get forward more later in the second half but always moved the ball on quickly to those that are more effective with it.

Fernando – 6.5

I thought Fernando had a really good in the first half, he seemed to be putting tackles in everywhere and managed to stamp some sort of authority over the midfield for a good 30 minutes. His tackling and quick release of the ball to Garcia worked really well with our ball retention but just looked out of depth the further forward he got, as he normally does. Didn’t manage to have the same effect on the game in the second half.

Aleix Garcia – 8 (Man of the Match)

A classy display from such a promising, intelligent young player. Moves around the pitch as if he is floating on air, gliding into areas where he can pick the ball up and move it on intelligently. Worked really well with Fernando and looked to dictate play in the first half. It took until the 73rd minute before I could remember one really stray pass as he overhit it out wide to Clichy. Never looked uncomfortable, never looked panicked, always seemed to find a blue shirt in a good position.

Nolito – 6

Never really got going in the game, his link up play with Kelechi was stuttered and looked like it really lacked in communication and consequently fluency and purpose. Often found running into a dead end and never really had the influence int he attacking third as he would’ve liked. Can’t underestimate the work he puts in defensively, however. Did not once shirk his responsibility and doubled up well with Clichy throughout.

Jesus Navas – 7

Had Luke Shaw on toast throughout the first half in what was a very positive 45 minutes from the Spaniard. His final ball looked effective and he was always finding himself in acres and 1 v 1 against Shaw. A really contrasting second half, never seemed to get past Shaw and bounces never really went his way. Linked up well with Garcia and Maffeo but his influence diminished entirely when moved out to the left.

Leroy Sané – 5.5

Completely ineffective. Never really got to face up his man with the ball and couldn’t really get involved with much of the build up. Had a good opportunity to play Kelechi in and really misplaced his pass.

Kelechi Iheanacho – 6

Like Sané, Kelechi never really had the influence over the game that he would’ve liked. He had an opportunity in the first half when put through on goal but chose to try and square what looked like a difficult ball to Sané instead of taking on a shot. I can’t remember him having an opportunity in the second half and don’t recall him making any sort of contribution in the build up.

Aleksandar Kolarov – 6

Looked better today than he has done in more recent outings, never really lacks in self confidence and that was once again evident as he attempted a trademark 40 yard effort rather than playing a simple ball and retaining possession. His crossfield passess are becoming a lot more hit and miss.

Raheem Sterling – 6.5

Once again Raheem was looking to get involved in all aspects of the build up play from the moment he came on for Sané. He was moving from both flanks and was looking to find pockets of space through the middle in behind Kelechi. Looked to get on the ball and have an effect but by then Navas’ luck up against Shaw was done and things never really took off for him.

Sergio Aguero – 6.5

Had to drop incredibly deep at times to get the ball but looked positive when he received it, like Sterling. Never seemed to get himself into a position to shoot in ended up firing more balls into the box than getting on the end of them. Had a good run down the wing against Carrick but seemed to slip and foul him which seemed to aptly sum up our clumsy approach play for the whole game.
