No matter what the competition, the Manchester derby is always a fixture to tune into. Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie could be considered the least important derby possible in a competitive fixture, but both sides will still be desperate for bragging rights.
Pep Guardiola already overcame Jose Mourinho this season in the first Premier League game between the two Manchester giants, and on the back of a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea, the United boss would love some revenge on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.
Mike Dean has today been appointed referee for the big game, and both teams have 4-1 victories under the 48-year-old so far this season. He was in charge of City’s 4-1 win at Stoke, a fiery match in which he handed out seven yellow cards, and more recently oversaw United’s 4-1 win over reigning champions Leicester.
