He is still a teenager, but Manchester City forward Enes Ünal has started life on loan at FC Twente with a bang, and after six rounds of matches is the Eredivisie’s joint top scorer with Ajax star Davy Klaassen.
19-year-old Ünal has featured in just four league games (three starts, one sub appearance) for Twente so far this season, but already has five goals. Following a hat-trick against Groningen in August, he yesterday scored two against ADO Den Haag. This match saw Twente’s front three comprised entirely of City youngsters, with Ünal flanked by Yaw Yeboah and Bersant Celina, who also scored his second goal in two games.
After an unhappy loan move to Genk in Belgium last season, Ünal was relocated to City’s partner club NAC Breda in the Dutch second tier, where he scored 8 goals in 11 appearances.
This season, the Turkish striker has moved up a level to the Dutch top flight and the early indications are that he’ll have no problems in what is a famous league for youth development.
Could Pep Guardiola have one of his future strikers already on the books? With Agüero still having plenty of years left in him, Kelechi Iheanacho taking the Premier League by storm, and Gabriel Jesus soon to arrive, the competition will be fierce, but Ünal is already making a case for himself at the age of 19.
