Stoke 1-4 Manchester City: Player Ratings

Three out of three for Manchester City in the first week of the season. It wasn’t perfect today, but again the Blues negotiated a tricky fixture and came away with a vital three points. Here’s how I rated the players.

Willy Caballero – 6

Made a great save in the first half and could do nothing with the penalty. His distribution at times was horrendous, though.

Pablo Zabaleta – 6

Struggled to contain the tricky Arnautovic, who gave the Argentine a torrid afternoon.

Nicolas Otamendi – 7

Dealt very well with the physical threat of Diouf, and was very impressive when in possession of the ball.

John Stones – 8 (Man of the Match)

Carried on his good vein of form with another steady showing. His composure on the ball is astounding. Has settled in seamlessly.

Aleksandar Kolarov – 7

Could and maybe should have conceded a penalty in the first half. Played some superb cross field passes into Navas and continues his improved performances.

Fernandinho – 7

Buzzing with energy as you’d expect, but his use off the ball was poor at times. Made some excellent tackles in the second half.

Jesus Navas – 6

Same old story. Plenty of endeavour and effort, but the final ball again let him down.

Kevin De Bruyne – 6

A delightful cross for Aguero’s second but his passing and movement was way below par.

David Silva – 7

Immediately took control of the game, and his off the ball movement was sublime. Constantly finding pockets of space.

Raheem Sterling – 7

Another impressive performance. Set up Nolito with a very unselfish pass and was a constant menace throughout. He is also pressing and defends well under the new manager.

Sergio Aguero – 8

Cometh the hour cometh the man. Dispatched his penalty with ease, and added another courtesy of a bullet header. The match winner.

Nolito – 7

Came on and wrapped up the game with an easy finish following some great work from Iheanacho, before tapping into an empty net from Sterling’s pass.

Kelechi Iheanacho – 7

His composure and maturity is beyond his years. Did brilliantly to set up Nolito for his goal, and his awareness for the fourth was top class.
