Despite persistent rumours linking him with a move to Italy this summer, Manchester City fan favourite Pablo Zabaleta is still in the plans of new boss Pep Guardiola.
According to a report in the Manchester Evening News, Guardiola has told Zabaleta that he wants him to remain at the Etihad, despite struggling last season with fitness and form.
Zabaleta looked a shadow of his former self at times in the last campaign, but Pep believes the 31-year-old mainstay still has plenty to offer and can play a part in his City side.
Serie A side Roma have an offer on the table for Zabaleta, and it seemed not too long ago that a move was imminent, only for nothing to materialise. In recent days, fresh reports from Italy have stated that Roma still have optimism about signing the Argentine, but only if City sign a replacement.
If Zabaleta is to stay, it is almost certain that City wouldn’t be in the market for a new right-back this summer, despite links to Bruno Peres and Héctor Bellerín. With veterans Zabaleta and Sagna, and youngster Pablo Maffeo also making a case for himself in pre-season, City would have three options for the position.
