Deportivo La Coruña legend Fran González joins Manchester City

One of Deportivo La Coruña’s most famous legends, Fran González, is joining Pep Guardiola’s revolution at Manchester City.

Following a recent report that González had been offered a job on Pep’s coaching team, La Voz de Galicia today confirms that the 47-year-old has accepted.

González is yet to sign his contract, but will join the coaching staff as a technical assistant, working with younger age groups, and will combine those duties with a presence in first team training. Fran said he is enthusiastic by this opportunity and wants to ‘soak in’ the club and also become fluent in English during his first year in Manchester.

Pep Guardiola personally encouraged the former Spain international, capped sixteen times between 1993 and 2000, to join him. González said, “When a coach like Pep Guardiola tells you he’d be delighted to have you by his side, you feel pride and it’s a compelling reason to join.”

Fran’s son Nicolás, an exciting young prospect at Barcelona, will not be following any time soon, as he is happy in La Masia.
