Roberto Mancini’s admiration for Yaya Touré is no secret. The 33-year-old Ivorian was at the heart of Mancio’s successes during his time in charge of Manchester City and he has attempted to sign Touré two years running at Inter.
While talking to Premium Sport today, Mancini was asked about the midfielder, who had seemed close to joining Inter earlier this transfer window. As expected, he spoke glowingly of his former charge: “I remain convinced that Yaya Touré is one of the best midfielders in the world, one that Italy has never seen.”
Mancini added, “Those who judge Yaya Touré on the basis of last year’s Champions League semi final, where his condition wasn’t great, do not understand anything.”
These words are unlikely to reignite Inter’s interest in Yaya, with the new Chinese owners reportedly overruling Mancini and ignoring his wishes to sign the veteran.
The former City boss may never again get to coach Yaya Touré, but it’s clear that the two will always have huge mutual respect after their important contributions to Manchester City’s revival.
