It’s judgment week on Leroy’s Got Talent! The prodigious Leroy Sané finds himself in the middle of a three-way scrap for his services next season. As recently reported, the German international winger is expected to decide his future around Wednesday of this coming week.
Manchester City or Bayern Munich? There may be a third option – no, not Manchester United, who have been rumoured to enter the race – not according to BILD tonight, anyway.
The third option for Sané is to stay at Schalke, who are making a committed effort to keep their 20-year-old jewel. Sané is still torn about what to do, with this set to be a monumental decision that could define his career. New Schalke coach Christian Heidel is aware of this and is going to make one last effort to keep the player in Gelsenkirchen.
Schalke want Sané to lead them back into the Champions League, but next summer his release clause drops significantly, meaning a club could buy him at a much lower price than if they accept City’s €50 million now. Weinzierl plans to present his arguments to Sané on why he should stay. His argument against a move to Manchester City will be that Sané could struggle to adjust to life and football in England, and there will be great pressure on his young shoulders.
It’s slightly harder for Weinzierl to argue against a move to Bayern, which would come a year later anyway, but would mean a much smaller fee in Schalke’s coffers. Although Bayern are said to have told Sané that he will be a regular in their team from 2017, Weinzierl will argue that there is a risk he could flop. Mario Götze is a good example of a young German talent floundering at the Bundesliga champions.
All of this information from BILD is likely to play with the nerves of City fans, especially so soon after Aymeric Laporte appeared to make a late U-turn and decided to stay at Athletic Bilbao. A second snub from one of Europe’s emerging young talents would be a serious huge blow to Pep Guardiola’s transfer plans.
Wednesday could be the day… will we see Leroy Sané at the Etihad Stadium next season?
