After missing out on primary summer target Aymeric Laporte, City are again looking to Spain for an alternative, reports AS.
21-year-old Atlético Madrid centre-back Jose María Giménez has been a sensation for Diego Simeone’s side, showing all the qualities of a future world-class defender. The Uruguayan has become a regular in the Atléti starting eleven and made 38 appearances in all competitions last season.
Now, Pep Guardiola has his eyes fixed on Giménez according to the Madrid-based newspaper. Atlético are calm about City’s interest because the player has a high release clause, and they hope that will ward off suitors. Were City to turn their interest into a formal approach, the likelihood is they would have to trigger Giménez’s €65 million (£50 million) clause, similar to Laporte’s new clause at Athletic Bilbao.
However, Atlético are wary enough of City’s interest that they are making preparations just in case. In recent days, they have spoken to Villarreal about Mateo Musacchio. With the new TV money pouring into English coffers, Atléti know anything is possible, and are aware that City could arrive any day and take Giménez from them.
