A day ago, City Twitter erupted in the wake of news that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was close to joining City. After transfer oracle Di Marzio broke the news, the English press also reported similar stories.
And then came the denials from City, relayed by several members of the press. These were very strong denials, stating that no meetings, no talks, nothing was happening.
Even so, the stories persist and tonight BILD in Germany has an eye-catching piece that sucks in the reader immediately: “After the transfer of Dortmund’s İlkay Gündoğan to Manchester City, Pep Guardiola wants to poach more from the area.”
BILD state what we’ve already been told, that City want to sign 26-year-old Aubameyang from Dortmund, but also bring up a more commonly linked name again – Leroy Sané.
According to the German newspaper, 20-year-old Sané is high on Guardiola’s wish list and City are preparing a huge offer in the region of €50 million to €60 million (£39.3 million to £47.1 million) for one of Europe’s hottest prospects. Schalke are still waiting for a clear signal that Sané wants to leave, because his release clause drops to just €37 million (£29 million) next summer and they will cash in now if he isn’t interested in remaining.
As for Aubameyang, BILD expects a fee of around €70 million (£55 million) to be splashed out by City for his services, and add that ‘negotiations have progressed’. Those being the negotiations that City are denying even exist.
In total, were City to land both targets, they would be willing to spend an enormous €130 million or so to recruit two of the Bundesliga’s greatest talents, after already prising Gündoğan away from Dortmund.
Just imagine those counter attacks…
