On This Day

On This Day – May 10: City qualify for the Champions League for the first time (2011)

On May 10 in City history…

1987: City appoint Mel Machin after former boss Billy McNeill leaves for Aston Villa. Machin came to City with a very respectable reputation, though it’s fair to say he wasn’t the fans’ first choice for the role.

2011: City reach the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history, courtesy of a 1-0 win against Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham Hotspur. Peter Crouch, who previously scored twelve months early to give Spurs a Champions League place ahead of City, diverted the ball into his own net. City’s expensive pursuit of Champions League football finally paid off.

Happy Birthday: Sam Cowan (1901-1964), Dave Ewing (1929-1999), Javan Vidal (27), Enes Ünal (19)
