On This Day

On This Day – May 5: City are relegated in a truly “Typical City” moment (1996)

On May 5 in City history…

1996: City were relegated in almost hilarious fashion after a 2-2 draw with Liverpool. With the scores level in the second half, Steve Lomas kept the ball in the corner, unaware that City needed another goal to stay up. As a result the Blues ran out of time and we’re subsequently relegated. A “Typical City” moment.

2010: City’s Champions League qualification hopes are crushed after a 1-0 defeat at the City of Manchester Stadium to Tottenham Hotspur. The visitors won the game through a Peter Crouch header, denying Roberto Mancini’s side the spot in Europe’s top club competition they so badly wanted.

Happy Birthday: George Livingstone (1876-1950), Derek Parlane (63)
