On This Day – March 27: Colin Bell inspires City to a 3-1 win over United

On March 27 in City history…

1968: Manchester City batter rivals Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford in the old Division One. Goals from Colin Bell, George Heslop and Francis Lee inspired City to three points, leaving almost 63,000 fans stunned at Old Trafford. George Best had scored in the opening minute for United, but City fought back and went home comfortable winners.


1999: City continue their rise up the lower leagues as they brush aside Reading 3-1 in a Division Two clash. Two goals from Terry Cooke and another from Shaun Goater meant Joe Royle’s side went home happy in what was City’s darkest era.
