On This Day – March 10: Balotelli’s allergy to grass

On March 10 in City history…

1900: One of football’s earliest superstars, Billy Meredith, scored the only goal as City beat Burnley 1-0 before 13,000 fans at the old Hyde Road stadium. Meredith’s career wasn’t without controversy, but he would become a Mancunian football legend, starring for both City and United. City fans would sing for him on the terraces of Hyde Road:

“Oh I wish I was you Billy Meredith
I wish I was you, I envy you, indeed I do!
It ain’t that you’re tricky with your feet,
But it’s those centres that you send in
Which Turnbull then heads in,
Oh, I wish I was you,
Indeed I do
Indeed I do”

2011: A night where Mario Balotelli famously grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It was a rainy evening in Kiev, where hosts Dynamo Kiev triumphed over City in their Europa League clash thanks to goals from Andriy Shevchenko and Oleg Gusev. Mario Balotelli entered City folklore after discovering he had a rare allergy to the grass used on the Kiev pitch. This led to that famous terrace anthem…
