Think Pep is only now influencing City’s transfer dealings? Think again.
El Confidencial journalist Gonzalo Cabeza has been writing about the Pep and Txiki meeting in Amsterdam, but has his own interesting piece of information.
According to the Spanish newspaper, Guardiola gave his approval to at least one signing LAST summer. Before splashing out a club record fee on Kevin De Bruyne, Txiki spoke to Pep about the flame-haired playmaker. Guardiola, whether as a friend or future City coach it is unclear, ‘had no hesitation’ in recommending De Bruyne, who was also a target for Pep’s current club Bayern Munich.
Which other signings in recent years has Pep given his approval of? Did Txiki only begin consulting with the Catalan tactician last summer in preparation for his arrival in 2016, or has this been a long-term thing? Bony, for example, doesn’t have the profile of a Guardiola player, and it’s doubtful he had any say in that.
One thing is for sure: ‘Pep approved’ De Bruyne is certain to be a big part of the new-look City team next season.
