Early in January, BILD probably jumped the gun a little when they said City were preparing an ‘imminent’ €55m (£40.5m) bid for Schalke wunderkind Leroy Sané. Nothing came of that, not that we’re aware of anyway, but City’s interest appears to be very real.
There has been word from Mundo Deportivo that Txiki Begiristain was in Germany a week ago to watch Schalke face Mainz. His reason? To observe Sané, who Pep Guardiola publicly said he is a fan of.
He was not alone, however. Barcelona scout Urbano Ortega and director Roberto Fernández were also in attendance, and MD reckons all of them had eyes on Sané, who recently turned 20.
The newspaper adds that ‘it seems almost impossible that Schalke can retain Sané’, especially with two powerhouses like Barca and City admiring him. They may not have been impressed last Friday, as Sané had a disappointing game and was subbed off, but the view is that he can become an world class player in the long-term.
Sané has three choices according to Mundo Deportivo: stay in Schalke and continue to develop as a player, follow Pep Guardiola to City, or play with Messi, Suarez and Neymar at Barcelona. The player will decide this summer, but make no mistake: City are interested in Leroy Sané.
