You can’t even make a cup of tea at the moment without another big name being linked to Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s imminent arrival has headline writers working overtime, and in some cases it is the players themselves batting their eyelashes at City to sign them. Last night we had Pogba waxing lyrical about the greatest coach in world football. Granit Xhaka also fancies a move and City may fancy him. Today, Sport tells us that İlkay Gündoğan will be one of Pep’s first signings.
Some of the players Pep would like most are surely at his current club, Bayern Munich. The Daily Star let us know on Tuesday that Pep has verbally agreed not to raid his current and soon to be former club for star names, but the Daily Star isn’t exactly a bastion of reliability so it’s natural to doubt the truth of that.
Which leads us to today’s second big story – after the information that Gündoğan could be joining. According to major Brazilian news portal Globo Esporte, one of Pep’s main objectives is to bring Brazilian winger Douglas Costa with him to Manchester.
Costa has been nothing short of sensational since his €30 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk to Bayern last summer, with four goals and eleven assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League. He is a nightmare for defenders, and much like Fernandinho, has people wondering why a big club didn’t take him sooner. Globo Esporte call him one of Guardiola’s ‘most trusted men’ on the pitch, and one he’d love with him at City.
The obvious problem would be Bayern not wanting to sell Costa. They do not relinquish big names easily, as Manchester United found out last summer when they made attempts to sign Thomas Müller. However, if he is near the top of Pep’s wishlist, City may apply pressure on the German champions to part with 25-year-old Costa, perhaps offering more than double what he cost last summer.
The article also says Pep would like to bring Lionel Messi to City, and calls that ‘almost mission impossible’. Almost?
Check out the sensational Douglas Costa in action. This may be a pipe dream, but he’d be a great addition to the City squad:
