As soon as Pep Guardiola was confirmed as City’s next boss, thoughts turned to potential signings and top of many lists was Thiago Alcântara.
A Guardiola protégé, 24-year-old Thiago was lured away from Barcelona by the man he described in January as “the best coach in history”. Thiago did sign a new deal with Bayern in August last year, but that did little to mute rumours of a move after Pep was announced.
To the dismay of City fans – those who wanted him at least – and possibly Pep himself, Thiago has shut down any talk of a move from Bayern. Speaking to BILD, Thiago said he is happy in Munich and has no plans to leave.
“There are always a lot of rumours. It’s a fact that Guardiola is joining Manchester City and we have to respect that. But there is no truth in the rumours saying I will follow him.
“I would not have signed a new contract had I wanted to leave the club. I extended my contract for a reason.
“I am loving life here in Munich. I am enjoying the city and life here in general.”
Though injury prone, always a doubt when bringing someone into the grueling English football schedule, Thiago would have been an elite acquisition for City. However, the club will have plenty of other midfield targets, and recent reports link us with the likes of Busquets, Gündoğan, Xhaka, Weigl, Mahmoud and Paredes. Midfield maniac Pep will not settle for substandard players, so Thiago or no Thiago, expect quality recruitments.
