Pep Guardiola loves a midfielder. No, really, Pep Guardiola LOVES a midfielder. Offer him ten and instead of picking a few, he’ll take them all and play the ones he doesn’t want in midfield at centre-back or left-back. So it’s no surprise to see City linked with so many of them. It is a weak point in our squad, with Yaya on the decline and Fernando never really living up the expectations. Fernandinho remains an excellent member of the squad and Delph has shown some quality, but Pep’s standards are very high. Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, Alonso, Vidal, Lahm – our next manager likes the crème de la crème in the middle of the park.
After links with the likes of Busquets, Weigl, Mahmoud and Gundogan lately, a more unexpected rumour surfaced today. The great Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia reports that City have made an enquiry about 21-year-old Roma midfielder Leandro Paredes, a former Argentina youth international.
Paredes has been loaned out to Empoli for experience and has stood out as one of Serie A’s brightest young talents, with City scouts impressed. They have asked Roma about his availability, but Di Marzio says Roma are not minded to sell him unless they receive an irresistable offer. City are very good at irresistable offers, so if the enquiry turns into a concrete bid, Paredes could be one of the new names on a much changed City squad list next season.
Paredes’ agent Pablo Sabbag was at Roma’s training ground today to discuss his future, despite Roma’s stance that he is unsellable. When Txiki Begiristain comes calling, not many players are unsellable, as Wolfsburg found out last summer when they sold the unsellable Kevin De Bruyne to City.
Here is some footage of Paredes in action for former club Boca Juniors.
