Multiple sources reported last Wednesday that City were preparing a bid of around £19m for Borussia Dortmund sensation Julian Weigl.
The 20-year-old has been one of the Bundesliga’s breakout young players this season after joining Dortmund from 2. Bundesliga side 1860 Munich last summer.
Stylistically, he is perfect for a Pep Guardiola side and so the City links make sense if – as most of the world expects – Guardiola takes over next summer and looks to build a squad capable of playing his way.
And yet Weigl himself doesn’t appear too flattered by the links. Speaking to Bild, the midfielder said:
“I’m really not going to leave Borussia. This is not an issue for me.”
“I can only emphasis that until 2019 I am under contract at BVB and still have some time [left].”
Weigl’s comments all but confirm that he will be going nowhere this month, but do not rule out a summer move. Sporting director Michael Zorc said Weigl will play for a “long time” at Dortmund, but he is unlikely to say anything different at this point.
A January move to City for a player developing so quickly may not be a wise move anyway, but don’t be surprised if this link emerges again next summer. Money talks and if Guardiola does take the reigns, players will be queueing up to join his new team.
