Manchester City, Liverpool and Barcelona enter race for Arsenal target Thomas Lemar – report

Manchester City are one of several clubs to have made their interest known in Thomas Lemar, the impressive Monaco winger who Arsenal have been trying to sign for much of the summer.

Today’s edition of L’Equipe reports that City, Liverpool and Barcelona, armed with a €222million warchest following the sale of Neymar to PSG, are interested in the 21-year-old French international.

This comes as bad news for Arsenal who have been struggling to extract Lemar from Monaco even with a lack of rivals for his signature, and it is Barça’s interest that may be the major cause of concern for Arsene Wenger. The report states that while he has remained calm about his future, Lemar sees Barcelona as a once in a lifetime opportunity and could push for a move to Camp Nou.

City’s interest in Lemar seems slightly questionable, with a host of quality wingers already on the books and the attacking target thought to be a prolific goal-scorer who can play on the flanks, such as Alexis Sanchez and Kylian Mbappé.

However, Mbappé, who was injured playing for Monaco yesterday, and Sanchez are not easy deals to pull off, with Monaco putting a €180million price-tag on Mbappé and Arsenal so far unwilling to grant Alexis the move he is said to want to City.

Lemar has shown the ability to find the net, albeit not quite as regularly as Alexis and Mbappé, scoring 14 times last season for Monaco, so it isn’t completely unrealistic that he could be an alternative target for Pep Guardiola.
