Manchester City have failed in an attempt to lure promising Rennes striker Adama Diakhaby to the Premier League, French newspaper L’Equipe reveals today.

The 21-year-old is instead swapping the east of Brittany for the principality of Monaco, with the Ligue 1 champions agreeing a deal worth up to €10million (€8million plus €2million in add-ons) to sign him.

City tried to muscle into the race for Diakhaby, which also included Lille and Newcastle, but perhaps seeing immediate opportunities at Monaco, who have more than proved their worth at developing young players, he and his representatives rejected a switch to the Etihad.

The arrival of Diakhaby could be seen as Monaco signing up a replacement for either Kylian Mbappé, linked with City and Real Madrid, or even Thomas Lemar, a primary Arsenal target this summer, as Diakhaby can play both as a forward and winger.
