Manchester City agree £51.6m fee with Monaco for left-back Benjamin Mendy

Manchester City will make Benjamin Mendy the most expensive defender in the history of football after agreeing a €57.5million (£51.6million) fee with Monaco on Friday, L’Equipe reports.

It took four bids but Monaco finally agreed to sell the 23-year-old France right-back to City after talks on Friday, and he could join his new Manchester City teammates in Los Angeles before Monday.

Offers of €40million, €45million and €52.5million were rejected by Monaco, who after seeing what City paid for Kyle Walker, demanded a similar amount be handed over for the 23-year-old French international.

And in the end, City are expected to pay more for Mendy than Walker, continuing the biggest spending spree in club history, one designed to give Pep Guardiola the squad he needs to compete on all fronts.

Mendy’s best friend Diacko Fofana also appears to have confirmed Mendy’s move to City on Instagram!

While Mohamed Bouhafsi of RMC Sport, widely considered to be the best source in France, gave a cheeky thumbs up when asked by a City fan to confirm the deal.
