Manchester City and Arsenal could present competition to Bayern Munich in the race to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, German newspaper SPORT BILD reports.
The 22-year-old is one of Germany’s best emerging talents and with his contract expiring in 2018, many clubs have eyes on him, especially as he is leaning to not extending his deal.
Bundesliga kings Bayern are the favourites to snap up Goretzka and he is said to have a verbal agreement to join them in the next year, but the interest of City and Arsenal could create a saga. Liverpool and Real Madrid have also expressed an interest in signing him.
Schalke’s stance has been clear, with sporting director Christian Heidel telling SPORT BILD, “No one needs to call us about Leon Goretzka. We will definitely not let him go. Goretzka is not for sale, even if a club offer between €20million and €30million.”
The Gelsenkirchen side have offered Goretzka, who has been capped nine times by Germany, a new deal worth up to €8million a season. However, he has rebuffed efforts so far and looks to be on the move, if not this summer then in 2018.
The question is, were City or Arsenal to make an offer this summer, would Schalke’s stance on keeping their midfield ace change, or are they happy to lose him to the all-conquering Bayern Munich next year? Of course, the player would also have to be convinced about a move to England, but SPORT BILD are clear: Manchester City and Arsenal have Leon Goretzka on their list.
