Newcastle are closing in on a cut-price £5 million deal for Manchester City midfielder Fernando Reges as Pep Guardiola’s summer overhaul continues.
The 29-year-old has been identified by Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez as a priority signing this summer, The Sun reports in an exclusive story, and hopes to close a deal soon.
The Brazilian midfielder was linked with a move to St James’ Park back in May with a double deal involving he and former FC Porto teammate Eliaquim Mangala rumoured. The Magpies appear to have moved on from Mangala, who is in talks to join Lyon in France, and are poised to sign former City-owned defender Florian Lejeune from Eibar.
Fernando is still on Rafa’s radar though, and despite interest from Southampton and Bournemouth, Newcastle are in pole position to sign him. City want £8 million for the defensive midfielder, but Benitez is confident of landing his target for just £5 million. Talks have already taken place and if a compromise can be reached, Fernando will swap the North West of England for the North East.
Fernando made only five starts in the Premier League last season and will have just one year left on his deal next summer.
