Revealed: Arsenal rejected bid from Manchester City last summer for key player

Manchester City’s interest in Arsenal right-back Héctor Bellerin is no secret. Pep Guardiola is an admirer of former La Masia youth, who like Pep himself, has the so-called ‘Barcelona DNA’.

And when Pep arrived at City last summer, it was heavily rumoured that Bellerin was one of his primary targets. For the other flank, it is said that he wanted Alex Sandro of Juventus, a player who is again on the radar this summer.

In the end, neither player was delivered to Guardiola and a quartet of ageing full-backs remained, this weak area on the pitch arguably one of the reasons the Catalan boss hasn’t enjoyed the best debut season in the Premier League.

In some information revealed by Barcelona-based newspaper SPORT today, it is reported that City in fact made an official bid for Bellerin last summer.

The fee offered to Arsenal for the now 22-year-old was €40 million (£34 million), a considerable amount but not enough to tempt Arsenal into a sale. The North London club face similar pressure in the upcoming transfer window, with Barcelona trying to take him back to Camp Nou.

Bellerin is still occasionally mentioned as a potential City target, but Kyle Walker of Arsenal’s fiercest rivals Tottenham now appears to be the main target. Nélson Semedo of Benfica has also been mentioned, with talks said to have been held between Txiki Begiristain and Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira.
