The history of Manchester City Football Club goes far back, all the way back to 1880 in fact. Gorton, Manchester is the home of the club, founded at St. Mark’s by Reverend Connell and William Beastow. There are several eras of the football club. Let’s take a look at some of the relevant history of Manchester City Football Club:
1880 – 1928:
Members of the St. Mark’s Church founded a football club that was commonly known as Manchester City. Two church wardens looked to curb the local violence and the church cricket club was what was first started. The first recorded match as a football team was in November of 1880, which they lost 2-1. They were then known as St. Mark’s. In 1894, they then turned to Manchester City Football Club under leadership of Joshua Parlby.
1928 – 1965
After the 1928 season, City finished eighth place and achieved top-flight status, with Tommy Johnson scoring 38 goals in the season. In 1932, Manchester City finished third and also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. This is the first hugely successful era of the club. In 1936, City became First Division champions for the first time after a runner-up finish in the previous season. The post-war era of Manchester City included a second place finish, followed by another FA Cup win in the 1955-1956 season.
1965 – 2001
Dark days hit Manchester City from 1963 to 1965. They were relegated in 1963 and re-purchased by George Poyser. That set up the golden era that ran from 1965 through the 1976 season. During that time, City mopped up trophies including a league title, FA Cup, League Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup, and the Charity Shield in 1969.

2001 – Present
That leads to the present day Manchester City Football Club, with the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008 marking the start of a long drought of success. The FA Cup win in 2011 made dreams come true and when it seemed it couldn’t get any better, the unforgettable Premier League win of 2011-12 happened. After Roberto Mancini’s tenure, Manuel Pellegrini was the boss of the club up all the way until 2016 when Pep Guardiola arrived. Kevin De Bruyne was signed in 2015, and has been one of the better signings of recent times. In 2014-15, City began a downturn after they were knocked out in the League Cup and FA Cup, and dropped to 4th place in the Premier League. They finished with six victories to secure fourth place, and qualified for the 2015-16 Champions League.
Manchester City have an amazing history of nearly 140 years and this just scrapes the surface. Following much adversity, City have now become one of the most well known teams in all of sports.
