Many left-backs continue to be linked with a move to Manchester City, but there is one who has been on the club’s radar much longer than any other target.
26-year-old Alex Sandro has been admired by City since before the arrival of Pep Guardiola and attempts were made to sign him during his days at FC Porto, only for Juventus to win that race and acquire him for €26 million in 2015.
The Brazilian is now considered one of Europe’s elite left-backs and despite reports that he is on the verge of agreeing a new deal at Juventus, still has signed nothing and Pep Guardiola is said to have wanted him last summer.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, in recent days City have initiated talks with the Serie A champions over a deal to sign Alex Sandro in the summer.
City are willing to pay an astronomical fee of €50 million (£42.4 million) to extract the world class full-back from Juventus, who prefers to stay away from the negotiations and focus on the final part of the season, with Juve fighting for three trophies.
The signing of Alex Sandro is a special request from Pep Guardiola, who has been a fan of the player since his Porto days. Pep wants to rejuvenate the left-back position with Gaël Clichy out of contract in the summer and Aleksandar Kolarov used more as a centre-back this season and not particularly great at left-back these days.
Alex Sandro’s excellent form will make a deal complicated for City, with Juventus expected to make talks difficult as they have no real desire to sell him. It may take a mind-blowing bid to convince the Old Lady and the question is, will even €50 million be enough?
